TO OUR PATIENTS

Dear Friends,

My parents were children of the Great Depression. They often talked about those times with my Aunts and Uncles when they were seated around the card table playing Canasta or Euchre. My Father had 14 brothers and sisters; my Mother had four. I remember my Father saying that he experienced "hard times" before the Depression and that he didn’t see much difference in how they were living except that food was a bit shorter and shoes had to last a lot longer. It was a difficult time for them and for our entire country.
In 1970, well known Chicago author Studs Terkel brought the matter to life in his book Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression. He interviewed people from all walks of life and many of them didn’t know at the time there was a situation called the Depression. They all had to live through it and they all made it through; some with tragedy others with stories to tell their children and grandchildren. I am no economist but Terkel’s book and my parent’s comments have helped me put our economic woes into perspective. Could it get worse? Anything is possible but it will have to get a great deal worse to come close to the hard times of the Great Depression.
